Sunglasses

Apart from being a fashion statement, sunglasses are extremely protective to the eye and the surrounding areas. Optometrists recommend wearing sunglasses whenever you may be exposed to Ultraviolet (UV) light. UV rays can cause damage to the skin surrounding our eyes as well as to the internal and external structures of the eyes. Different quality lenses offer different UV blocking abilities. Category 3 sunglasses have been certified to block out all harmful UV rays.

Sunglasses | The Eyewear ShopSun damage to the eye can come in many forms. Most commonly, we observe changes to the white (sclera) of the eye, in the form of pterygium and pingueculae. This damage is a growth of the white tissue outwards and onto the surface of the front of the eye, the cornea. Sunglasses act as a blocker to the harmful rays that exacerbate this growth. Sun damage can also cause early cataract and cancers of the skin around the eyes.

Category 3 sunglasses are available in either tinted or polarised options.

When choosing your sunglasses, keep in mind the quality of the lens as well as the shape. Larger sunglasses that provide side (temple) protection will offer the most prevention against the effects of sun damage.
