ZEST (Zocular Eyelid System Technology)

Dry eyes can have multiple causes, but one common contributor to dry eye symptoms is Blepharitis. 

Blepharitis is a condition where the eyelids become inflamed, appearing red or sore, with flakes or crusting along the eyelid margin. This can occur when bacteria and other debris build up around the eyelids, particularly at the base of the eyelashes. It is normal to have bacteria living on our skin. However, some people can develop a greater buildup around the eyes, which contributes to dandruff like flakes, crusting and inflammation of the eyelid margins.

Bacteria can form an extracellular matrix called a biofilm. As biofilm builds up, it can contribute to eyelid inflammation and irritation. 

Another factor that can contribute to eyelid inflammation is Demodex, microscopic mites that can live around the eyelashes and eyelid margins. Higher numbers of Demodex can be associated with blepharitis, particularly when there is lash debris around the base of the eyelashes.
