Blepharitis & Dry Eye
Do you find your vision fluctuating throughout the day? Are your eyes red, sore, gritty, watery or burning? These are common symptoms of dry eye and blepharitis, conditions that can easily be managed and treated by your local optometrist.
Blepharitis is a condition of the eyelids where the lid line becomes inflamed, red and even produces flaky ‘skin’ deposits. Commonly associated with rosacea, this condition can be managed with in-office therapies, as well as ongoing home treatments to clean and restore the eyelid appearance.
Dry Eye is a result of an imbalance within the tears that coat the surface of our eyes. Our tears are a balance of 3 components: oil, water and mucous. The mucous layer is responsible for protecting our eyes from infection and making the ocular surface more "wettable". Water is the hydrating layer that forms the bulk of our tears, and the oily top layer prevents the tears from evaporating.
Commonly, the oily layer begins to deteriorate with time. The oily layer can be rejuvenated by dietry changes such as increasing the intake of omega 3’s into your diet. There are also in-office treatments available such as "Blephasteam" or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy to improve the production of tears. Moisturising eye drops can provide significant relief of symptoms, but they are only part of the process. Many people continue to battle with dry eye every day and are unaware of the help their optometrist can offer them.
